Setting up Active Directory enviroment.

Setting up server and users:

  • First I set up a user VM running Windows 10 Enterprise edition in VirtualBox.

  • I powered on the machine and set up Windows with all default settings.
  • Next I set up a VM for the server, using Windows 2022 server eval.

  • I then set up a network for both of the VMS and connected them to it

  • For the user account, I selected domain join
  • Then named the account user1, followed by a password on the next screen.

Setting up host:

  • I logged on to the server and grabbed the IP address

  • I then logged onto the User1 VM and added the servers IP address as the DNS for User1. I then put googles DNS as the secondary DNS server.
Active Directory setup:

  • On the dashboard of the server manager, on the server, I selected add roles and features. Then I continued down to server roles and selected Active Directory Domain Services, using all default settings.

  • After installation complete an exclamation point pops up in the top right corner. I clicked it and was prompted to add a new forest, which I named AD.local.

  • I then entered a password and selected default sections for the rest, and rebooted the computer.

Creating Users:

  • Under tools I selected Active Directory users and computers. Then selected the users category and right clicked it, selecting new user.

  • I then filled out the information for user one, and gave them a password as well.

  • User1 has successfully been created!

Joining the domain from User1's computer.

  • On User1's computer, I searched for 'Access Work or School,' selected the connect option, and then selected 'Join this device to a local Active Directory domain.'

  • I then entered the AD.local for the domain, and User1's username and password that was previously created.

  • After restarting the VM, I am now able to log in to User1's account!

Resetting Passwords:

  • User1 forgot their password, so I will reset it for them.

  • I right clicked their name, selected reset password. I entered a default password and selected 'User must change password at next logon,' for security reasons.

User1 was promoted:

  • To update User1's job title, I right click their user account, selected properties, and went to the organization tab.

  • I then updated User1's Job Title.
